Serving Our Community
The Fort Wayne Sexual Assault Treatment Center provides first-response
medical forensic
examinations to children, women and men who have been victims of sexual
assault. The Center is
nationally recognized as a leader in sex crime victim services.
Our services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at no cost to our
patients. The Center
responds
to sexual assaults in Allen County and the fifteen surrounding counties.
The Center also
provides
forensic evidence collection during any death investigation process as
requested by the
counties coroner.

Do I call to make an appointment to see a Sexual
Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) at the Fort
Wayne Sexual Assault Treatment Center?
No, if you chose to report to law enforcement.

examination?
No, the Indiana Victims Sex Crimes fund will pay for
the medical–forensic examination and the forensic evidence collection.

What can I expect at the Fort Wayne Sexual
Assault Treatment Center?
Sexual assault patients along with any family
members or friends are welcome at the Center which is a secure facility.
When arriving at the Center, the patient, family and friends will find a
comfortable and relaxing waiting room in a private environment.
After arriving at the Center, an interview with a
sexual assault response team (SART) will be conducted. The team includes
law enforcement who conducts an investigation and provides emergency assistance,
a victim advocate who is trained in sexual assault, and the sexual assault nurse
examiner (SANE) who provides a forensic evidentiary examination and medical
support. After the interview, the patient and SANE will go to the
examination room. All family and friends are welcome to remain in the
waiting room.

What can I expect during the examination at the
Center?
The examination room is equipped with
state-of-the-art equipment that is not available in local emergency rooms.
The examination room and equipment is designed to maintain the maximum level of
comfort.
What can I expect after the examination?
At this time, any additional questions will
be answered, medications given and follow up, if necessary with the Fort Wayne
Sexual Assault Treatment Center will be scheduled along with counseling
information and information on STD testing. Within one week a SANE will
call to follow up and answer any additional medical questions and follow up
assistance.

What does the Word SANE or SANE-A mean?
SANE is an acronym for a Sexual Assault Nurse
Examiner. A SANE is a registered nurse who has completed advanced training
to care for those who have been sexually assaulted. The role of the the
SANE nurse is to provide medical forensic care including patient history, head
to toe examination, detailed genital assessment, collection of evidence,
medication administration, and referrals back into the community for follow-up
care. The SANE is part of a multidisciplinary team that responds to
victims of sexual assault.
Certification as a sexual assault nurse examiner
(SANE-A) in adolescent and adult began in 2002 through the International
Forensic Nurses Association SANE-P certification through the International
Forensic Nurses Association began in 2007. The Fort Wayne Sexual Assault
Treatment Center has 5 certified SANE-A's and 3 SANE-P's.
