Our History
On January 29, 1996, the Fort Wayne Sexual Assault
Treatment Center opened its doors. During its first year
in operation, the Center performed 123 forensic
examinations on adults who reported the crime within 96
hours and sought to report to law enforcement.
Since 1996 the Center have achieved great strides in research and treatment of
victims. Our staff has been involved in
accomplishing the following:

Serving Allen and surrounding counties
Our Center has been recognized and
credentialed by the medical staff of
Lutheran Health Network, St. Joseph
Hospital, and Parkview Hospital as
Forensic Nurse Examiner's with Provider
Privileges to provide the comprehensive
care to the sexual assault patient for
Allen and surrounding counties. |

Working with legislature Our staff
served on the Governor's Task Force and assisted in the
development of the 1996 Indiana State Protocol for the
Forensic and Medical Examination of Sexual Assault
victims. |

Collaborating with law-enforcement
Our staff designed a new Indiana State Police Sexual Assault
Evidence Collection Kit |

Advocating for children The Center
played an integral role in the development and
implementation of the Child Advocacy Center of Allen
County. The Center directors worked closely with area
law enforcement and justice department on the
development of this new and long overdue service for
child victims of sexual assault. |

Establishing a
strong foundation Our staff have
spearheaded the establishment of an Indiana Chapter of
the International Association of Forensic Nurses.
Official membership was awarded in June of 2000 and
two of the Center's staff serve on the founding board
of directors in the role of President and Secretary. |

Leadership
The Center's Director of Patient Care served as past
president and vice president on the
Board of Director's of the Indiana Chapter of the
American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (APSAC). |

Sharing our knowledge
Our staff actively assist communities throughout the Midwest in
education concerning Sexual Assault Response Teams,
Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners, Forensic Evidence
Collection, Date-Rape Drug usage and more. |

Community Recognition
The Center received the "Hope Award" from the Allen County YWCA
during their 1999 Week Without Violence |
