No one is immune to the horror of sexual assault.

Break the cycle, start the healing.

Forensic nurses have the opportunity to make a difference.

What is a S.A.N.E.?

SANE is an acronym for Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner. A SANE is a registered nurse who had completed advanced training to care for those who have been sexually assault. The role if the SANE nurse is to provide medical forensic care including patient history, head to toe examination, detailed genital assessment, collection of evidence, medication administration and referrals back into the community for follow-up care. The SANE is part of a multidisciplinary team that responds to victims of sexual assault.

At the Fort Wayne Sexual Assault Treatment Center, we are committed to providing SANE educational courses that will prepare nurses to make a difference and begin the healing.  Our educational program includes:

Adult & Adolescent Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Courses

The purpose of this training is to provide Registered Nurses (RN) with the knowledge to become more proficient in taking care of the sexual assault patient.  This course is specifically designed to educate the RN about the adolescent and adult sexual assault patient and performing the medical forensic examination.  This Sexual Assault nurse Examiner Program (SANE)/Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) is a 5-day didactic training that involves a clinical component with completion.

Pediatric Medical-Forensic Sexual Assault Examiner Courses

It is estimated that at least two out of every ten girls and one out of every ten boys are sexually abused by the end of their 13th year.  You don’t have to feel powerless.  Opportunities to improve identification and management of pediatric victims through the multidisciplinary team approach are available.  Our course is dedicated to showing you the specific steps you can take to evaluate and treat the sexually abused pediatric patient.

The Fort Wayne Sexual Assault Treatment Center (FWSATC) sets high standards for the nurses that it educates on issues of sexual assault. We hold in high regard the standards that we teach, thus setting high clinical standards as well.  Both the classroom and clinical component must be completed within the designated time frames in order to receive a certificate of completion of training from the FWSATC .
