About a Sexual Assault
Nurse Examiner Certificate
The Fort Wayne Sexual Assault Treatment Center (FWSATC)
sets high standards for the nurses that it educates on
issues of sexual assault. We hold in high regard the
standards that we teach, thus setting high clinical
standards as well. This manual is designed to assist the
forensic nurse in obtaining all necessary clinical hours
needed to obtain a SANE certificate from the FWSATC .
The Fort Wayne Sexual Assault Treatment Center SANE
Certificate Requirements include:
-
A minimum of 40 hours of didactic
forensic nursing education
-
A minimum of 32 hours of clinical
experiences with an additional number of female
examinations
-
Sexual Assault Examination
preceptorship experience
-
A passing score on a comprehensive
written examination. Education provided by this
course meets, and in most areas exceeds, the minimum
educational requirements approved by the
International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN)
for use as Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Educational
Standards for the Adult and Adolescent Patient and
meets the SANE Course Eligibility Requirement for
those wishing to sit for the SANE Certification
examination. It is strongly recommended that
additional education and clinical experience be
obtained prior to caring for the pediatric patient.
The goals of the preceptorship are for the sexual
assault nurse examiner candidates to become familiar
with the roles and responsibilities of other team
members in their area, as well as feeling
comfortable in their own role. Now that you have
completed the didactic portion of the SANE course as
well as the written examination, you should now
begin planning your precepting experiences. A total
of 32 hours of clinical with required examinations
is required, as defined by the following guidelines.
No clinical experiences that are directly related to
children will be able to be used for the
adolescent/adult clinical component. Documentation
and verification of the experiences should be
documented on the Preceptorship Log Sheets.
Preceptor requirements should be completed within a
nine-month time frame for clinical components. If
contact with the Fort Wayne Sexual Assault Treatment
Center (FWSATC) is not made prior to the due date of
the clinical experiences, candidates will be removed
from the candidacy list. Please know that
extensions can be granted up to eighteen months past
the completion date of the originally attended
course. The FWSATC will be the only
granting authority for the extensions.
Anyone requiring an extension of 12-18 months will
need to complete a 12 hour didactic review, set by
the FWSATC, in order to stay current with changing
forensic information to obtain their completion
certificate. The refresher portion will be in
addition to the 32 hours (plus required
examinations) or required clinical experience and
will require further payment over the cost of the
initial SANE course. No one will be granted
certificates over a time frame of eighteen-months
for any reason.
