Understanding the Facts

84% of rape victims know their attackers.  The rapist may be a relative, friend, co-worker, date or other acquaintance.

bulletIn the United States, 1.3 women are raped every minute.
bulletOne out of every eight men will be sexually assaulted in his lifetime.
bulletExperts estimate that as many as 90% of all rapes are never reported.

 

If you or someone you know has been raped:

bullet

You are not to blame for what has happened to you regardless of the circumstances.

bulletGo to a safe place and dial 911.
bulletDo not bathe/shower, brush teeth, use the restroom, change clothes, smoke or drink if at all possible.
bulletBring identification and a change of clothing with you to the Center if possible.

 

Why seek treatment:

To be sure you are okay.

bulletTo be examined by a sexual assault nurse examiner with experience in collecting evidence and photographing injuries.
bulletTo protect yourself against sexually transmitted diseases and receive education about possible pregnancy.
